Consultative Workshops Held for Ashtoum El-Gamil Protected Area and Egypt’s Marine Mammal Action Plan

Summary

On 27–28 January 2026, national consultative workshops were held in Port Said, Egypt.

Organized by SPA/RAC and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) under the EU-funded SEMPA project, the two back-to-back workshops provided a platform to present and discuss:

  • the key findings of the ecological and socio-economic assessments conducted for Ashtoum El-Gamil Protected Area;
  • the gap analysis of the implementation of the 2012 National Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Mammals in Egyptian Mediterranean waters, as well as the main recommendations for its update.

The workshops brought together representatives from public agencies, NGOs, fishers’ organizations, universities, and protected area managers in Egypt.

Participants shared insights and experiences and discussed recommendations to support the sustainable management and conservation of the natural and socio-economic environment of Ashtoum El-Gamil Protected Area.
