From knowledge to action: advancing a biodiversity-inclusive blue economy
On 5 May 2026, SPA/RAC participated in the GEF-funded MedProgramme National Outreach Workshop held in Rabat, Morocco. The workshop brought together representatives of national institutions, MedProgramme implementing partners and technical stakeholders to showcase project achievements, strengthen synergies with national initiatives and identify solutions with strong replication potential across the country.
During the session dedicated to MedProgramme experiences, SPA/RAC presented the FishEBM MED initiative “From knowledge to action: towards a biodiversity-inclusive blue economy in the Mediterranean”, highlighting how ecosystem-based fisheries management can contribute to more sustainable blue economy development.
An integrated approach for sustainable blue economy planning
The presentation illustrated how FishEBM MED addresses major environmental and fisheries challenges, including biodiversity loss, climate change, non-indigenous species, marine litter and vulnerable species, through a common ecosystem-based framework. Rather than addressing these issues separately, the project promotes stronger coordination between fisheries and environmental authorities, helping countries align priorities and move from fragmented sectoral approaches to integrated planning.
Participants were introduced to a range of regional knowledge products developed under the project, including technical guidance, scientific assessments and methodological tools that support harmonized monitoring, improved data management and evidence-based decision-making. These resources are designed to strengthen regional cooperation while supporting implementation at national level.
Supporting countries from planning to implementation
SPA/RAC also presented the FishEBM MED roadmap for translating scientific knowledge into concrete actions through the development of National Action Plans Plus (NAP+), investment plans and pilot initiatives. The approach is adapted to each country’s context and aims to integrate biodiversity conservation and ecosystem-based fisheries management into national blue economy planning.
By promoting a structured, science-based and replicable methodology, FishEBM MED contributes to strengthening environmental governance and supports Mediterranean countries in building a sustainable and biodiversity-inclusive blue economy.
