Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean

The Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean (SPA/BD Protocol) was adopted on 10 June 1995. The Protocol entered into force on 12 December 1999, replacing the Protocol Concerning Mediterranean Specially Protected Areas, adopted on 3 April 1982, in the relationship among the Parties to both instruments.

The Annexes to the Protocol were adopted on 24 November 1996 and entered into force on 12 December 1999. 

The latest amendment to Annex II, corresponding to the List of Endangered or Threatened Species, took place in December 2023 (see Decision IG.26/4). The latest amendment to Annex III, corresponding to the List of Species whose Exploitation is Regulated, also took place in December 2023 (see Decision IG.26/4).
