This document has been prepared as Algeria’s national contribution to support the elaboration of the Post-2020 SAPBIO, which was requested in 2019 by the Barcelona Convention COP 21 and carried out by UNEP/MAP-SPA/RAC in 2020-21.
This 2021 UNEP/MAP-SPA/RAC publication presents recommendations oriented towards the conservation of the Algerian marine and coastal biodiversity for 2030 and beyond. In support of that, it provides relevant information on fauna and flora, sketches an overview of the marine and coastal ecosystems’ status and unveils the pressures on the vulnerable the marine ecosystem.
The document also provides an assessment of the legal framework for marine and coastal protected areas.
The state of play analysis allowed the identification of national needs and priority actions, along with funding opportunities.
The conclusions and recommendations, proposed by the experts and discussed with representatives of Algeria national institutions, are meant to address the main problems that marine and coastal biodiversity is facing.
