Assistance to countries for creating and managing SPAs: outline of the Project's objectives, achievements and prospects.
To promote the choice, creation and management of MPAs and lead them to be included on the SPAMI List, RAC/SPA has developed and implemented this Project, with the financial backing of the European Commission, for seven countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean (Algeria, Cyprus, Israel, Malta, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia).
In partnership with staff at universities (University of Alicante), research institutions (ICRAM) and training institutions (GIP ATEN), technical guides and training have been provided, and six management plans have been prepared to enrich their MPAs.
Following this project, several states have requested help to have their areas reclassified as SPAMIs.
