Supporting the Southern Mediterranean Contracting Parties in implementing ecosystem approach to achieve GES – EcAp MED PLUS

36 months, from March 2024 to February 2027.

Project Background and Objectives
Building on the achievements of the previous EcAp MED phases (EcAp MED I, II and III), the EcAp MED PLUS project aims to further strengthen institutional and technical capacities in the seven Southern Mediterranean countries to advance the implementation of the Ecosystem Approach (EcAp) and the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP) at regional and national levels.
Its overall goal is to support progress towards Good Environmental Status (GES) and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Mediterranean region.
Main Objectives
The project assists beneficiary countries — Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia — to:
- support the next phase of the IMAP update at regional and national levels, including the update of the IMAP Info System;
- strengthen and stabilise national capacities for effective IMAP implementation and delivery of quality-assured data;
- review, develop or upgrade national Programmes of Measures (PoM) and National Action Plans (NAPs);
- reinforce cooperation, governance mechanisms and science-policy interfaces at regional and subregional levels.
SPA/RAC’s Role
SPA/RAC contributes to the implementation of the following national activities for Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia:
- supporting the IMAP revision process at regional level and at national level for Algeria, Libya and Tunisia;
- strengthening national capacities for IMAP implementation and data generation;
- contributing to the review/development of Programmes of Measures (PoM) and National Action Plans (NAPs) for Algeria, Libya and Tunisia;
- reinforcing cooperation, governance mechanisms and science-policy interfaces at regional and subregional levels.
