This initiative aims to save the Mediterranean fan mussel, Pinna nobilis, from extinction.
On 17 September 2025, SPA/RAC participated online in the final workshop of the LIFE Pinna project in Piran, Slovenia, dedicated to saving the critically endangered Pinna nobilis.
The event gathered experts and stakeholders to share knowledge on restocking strategies, larval collection methods, and broader conservation efforts essential for the species’ recovery across the Mediterranean.
As the body mandated to support the Pinna nobilis Restoration Programme adopted under the Barcelona Convention (Decision IG.26/5, 2023), SPA/RAC highlighted its ongoing role in driving Mediterranean-wide cooperation.
A Pan-Mediterranean Task Force will soon be established to lead, propose, and assess translocation of potentially resistant individuals and address restoration challenges.
SPA/RAC reaffirms its commitment to work hand-in-hand with partners to protect this iconic species and safeguard marine biodiversity.
